Meet Arumugam, one such independent candidate, who has promised to to set up a rehabilitation centre for tipplers in Perambur. Arumugam, a member of Tamil Nadu Tipplers Awareness Association, on Tuesday, filed his nominations for the bypoll to Perambur constituency. Arumugam speaking to DT Next said, “Former chief minister J Jayalalithaa in her election manifesto in 2016 assured to set up rehabilitation centers in all the constituencies, but so far not one has been formed. So, I promise to create one in Perambur constituency if elected.”
His top three symbol preferences are liquor bottle, plastic glass and a walking stick. Explaining the rationale behind the symbol choices, Arumugam said, “Bottle represents the association’s symbol and the glass is another accessory for drinking. However, after consuming liquor people will need support to walk and that is why the last preference for walking stick.” He said that he is confident of getting either one of the three symbols. When asked whether their association is for or against drinking, he replied that the symbol of his association is a liquor bottle with mangal sutra tied to it, which shows that if people consume liquor they have to lose their families and so they are against consuming liquor.
