Raveendranath would not have received a poll ticket if former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had been alive, Stalin said in his election campaign speech at Periyakulam coming under Theni Lok Sabha segment on Wednesday.

Campaigning for Congress’s EVKS Elangovan and the DMK candidate contesting the Periyakulam bypoll, Stalin said that it was unfortunate that 18 MLAs, who were all members of the ruling party, were disqualified by Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal, while 11 others, including the Deputy CM, who voted against the government during the Floor Test continued to be member of the House.

Referring to the Kodanad case, the DMK president said it was an attempt to retrieve a ‘register of scams’, involving the CM and his deputy, in the estate. Moreover, he said Panneerselvam amassed benami assets all over Bodi and also in Kerala.

Taking a dig at the BJP-led centre, the DMK supremo said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was serving as a ‘watchman’ for tainted business tycoons like Vijay Mallya and others. If Modi was a watchman, Stalin asked why he failed to prevent the Pulwama attack and save the lives of 44 CRPF personnel.

Elangovan, the Congress candidate, also criticised the AIADMK’s elections campaign as a ‘funeral procession’.
