Campaigning for TMC’s Lok Sabha candidate NR Natarajan and Thanjavur bypoll AIADMK candidate R Gandhi at various places in Thanjavur, he nearly went to the extent of placing Edappadi K Palaniswami on a par with veteran Congress leader saying that Tamil Nadu was now seeing a common man as CM in Palaniswami after Kamaraj.

Vasan, who comes from a family that had strong Congress links in the past, said that Thanjavur and Cauvery were inseparable, and the former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was the one who won the rights of Tamil Nadu over the Cauvery water.

The TMC leader charged, “The Congress cheated Tamil Nadu by compromising with Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who vowed not to release Cauvery water to TN,” Vasan said.

Claiming that Tamil Nadu would have got its due share of Cauvery water had Congress initiated necessary steps, Vasan said, the Congress-Janata Dal (S) coalition government in Karnataka was firm in denying water to Tamil Nadu. The DMK too was overtly and covertly supporting these parties for the sake of power, he charged.

Taking a dig at Communist leaders in the state for addressing election meetings organised by the Congress, the TMC leader said that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, a Left veteran, had openly declared they would defeat Rahul Gandhi at Waynad, the second LS seat from where the Congress president has decided to contest.

Regarding the AIADMK government’s performance, Vasan said, “We have a common man Edappadi K Palaniswami as Chief Minister and O Panneerselvam, Deputy Chief Minister, who knows the pulse of the people. Both their approach to several issues and the schemes introduced by them are tailor-made to suit the needs of the people. After 50 years, we witness the Kamarajar rule in the state,” Vasan said.

He listed various schemes for Thanjavur implemented by AIADMK and said the party had upgraded Thanjavur into a city corporation. He further added the candidates of the AIADMK alliance would fight for schemes that would usher in all-round development of Thanjavur.

He campaigned at East Gate, Old Bus stand, Railway junction, Pookkara Street, Nanjikkottai Road and Karanthai. He was accompanied by R Vaithilingam, the AIADMK deputy coordinator and Rajyasabha MP.
