A 26-year-old Sudan national, who was arrested for possessing weapons and indulging in robbery on Marina beach last August, was released and sent back to his country by the city police on Saturday.
The man identified as Mohammed Al Mustafa Nasraldeen Mohammed Babiker came to India in 2010 on a student visa, and enrolled in B Pharm course at a private college in Nagapattinam. However, he soon dropped out and went back to Sudan. Upon his return to India a few years ago, the college refused to re-admit him. After this, he moved to Chennai and took shelter on the Marina. He started seeking alms at mosques and ventured into robbery for a living. He was first arrested in Mangadu, and then by Anna Square police in possession of weapon.
After spending six months in jail, Mohammed Al Mustafa was released recently. As per the directions of Greater Chennai Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan, police tried to get in touch with his family in Sudan to deport him. After his family expressed inability to afford the cost of air ticket, the city police got an approval from Foreigners Regional Registration Office and arranged flight tickets that cost Rs 42,000. They also bought him a pair of dress and gave him Rs 2,000 in cash to reach home.
Speaking to DT Next, Inspector S Jayaraj, who made the arrangements, said the man was very happy about returning to his native.
“He was overwhelmed since he was unable to visit his family during the past three years. He wants to do farming along with his family members,” said the inspector.
