The incident happened late on Tuesday evening when Kripavathi was taking care of her one-and-a-half-year-old grandchild, Pragya, who was playing near their house at Kalaimagal Nagar in Poonamallee. The child was under Kripavathi’s care, as her daughter Haripriya was working.
While playing, the child went near the well and slipped inside. Shocked to see this, Kripavathi shouted for help and jumped inside the well that has four feet water and saved the child from drowning.
As she could not climb out, she raised an alarm. Hearing her cries, the neighbours reached there and first took the child out, and sought help from the Fire and Rescue Service to help Kripavathi out.
Though there was a water pump inside the well, both the girl and the grandmother escaped without any major injuries. Kripavathi had some minor bruises on her leg and was treated in the nearby hospital.
