This was a marked decline from last year, when Vellore and Tiruvannamalai were ranked 28th and 23rd respectively out of the 32 districts in the State. This year, Vellore came 29th while Tiruvannamalai was 23rd among government schools, while pass percentages was 85.4 per cent (Vellore) and 88.03 per cent (Tiruvannamalai).
“A lot of soul searching has to be done to ensure that results improve next year. We did not expect this slide to the bottom of the ranks table,” Vellore Chief Educational Officer S Mars told DT Next. He added that they would evaluate the performance of individual schools to identify where exactly the failure lay. “What is heart wrenching is that we had taken special efforts to increase admissions by citing all the advantages of studying in government schools which had facilities on a par with private institutions,” added Tiruvannamalai CEO V Jayakumar.
