Call to raise height of Mettur dam
The Cauvery Delta Farmers Association general secretary Mannargudi S Ranganathan on Friday appealed the state government to insist Karnataka to construct the new dam within the territory of Tamil Nadu and also suggested to increase the height of Mettur Dam to facilitate storage of more water as part of efforts to stop water draining waste into the sea.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of farmers at Ariyalur, Ranganathan told the reporters that the increasing the height of Mettur dam by another 10 feet would help in storing an additional 24 TMC. Apart from this, if check dams were constructed across the Cauvery and Kollidam at every 2 km, another 24 TMC could be stored. Similarly, building check dams across branch rivers would facilitate storing 10 TMC. “Thus, we can together store somewhere around 60 TMC more. This will help in preventing water flowing waste into the sea during the monsoon,” Ranganathan said.
Appealing the state to initiate steps to recommend the construction of the dam within the territory of Tamil Nadu, the senior farmer leader pointed out that the ruling party should not forget what the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa desired to do.
