According to Inspector of Palani town police G Senthil Kumar, the family hailed from Kollam district of Kerala. He said 31-year old S Srinath, the breadwinner of the family, took the extreme decision as he was unable to overcome his debt burden.

Srinath, a building contractor by profession, reportedly borrowed about Rs 4 lakh. He could hardly repay the money borrowed. Upset over this, Srinath along with his wife and son informed his relatives that they were going to Palani on vacation.

“When the relatives called Srinath over phone, there was no response. They immediately approached Sooranad police in Kerala and provided photographs of the three family members. The Sooranad police then contacted the Palani police station to trace their whereabouts,” Senthil Kumar said.

Subsequently, five special police teams inspected all lodges and ultimately found them in a lodge at Palani Adivaram around Thursday midnight.

“The phone call from Sooranad police was received at 11.15 pm, and our police team managed to locate the family members within a span of 45 minutes. Since Srinath’s wife had a change in mindset at the last minute before consuming poison, she discouraged her husband from committing such an act,” the Inspector said.

Two packets of rat poison were recovered from the lodge room, where they stayed. After being rescued, the family members were counselled against taking such decisions under any circumstances in the future. All three were allowed to leave only after their relatives arrived, Senthil Kumar added.
