The security and checking have been beefed up as the state heads for bypoll elections on May 19th. All roads in Madurai have been cordoned for checking due to the bypoll in Thiruparangundram. It is in the Sittampatti toll gate in Melur where the election flying squad seized 2 kilos and 687 grams of gold from a car that came from Chennai.
The flying squad was headed by Jegannarayanan and Police sub inspector Muniyandi. The jewels had no proper papers on them and they were taken to exhibit for a jeweller in Madurai, claimed Praveen Singh who came in the car along with 4 others.
With everything about this car was off-place, the officers without delay seized the car and submitted the gold to the treasury. This incident raised eyebrows due its coinciding the bypoll elections (Sulur, Thiruparangundram, Aravakurichi, Ottapidaram).
