When head constable Dineshkumar and woman sub-inspector Sinimol of the Triplicane police station, who were on night patrol, went around asking the shops to shut as it was beyond midnight, they saw a gang of four men smoking on the roadside and asked them to vacate the premises.
However, the men laughed at the police personnel and allegedly made comments in Hindi. Irked by this, Dineshkumar pushed one of them, identified as Ashutosh, and asked him and others to leave the spot immediately.
But Ashutosh, who was infuriated, allegedly verbally abused Dineshkumar and attacked him. A physical fight broke out between them and in the scuffle, Ashutosh sustained injuries on his nose. They were brought to the station. During an investigation, the police found that they were all Navy personnel from Kochi.
“Ashutosh is a lieutenant colonel and they had reached Chennai in a ship recently,” the police said. After they lodged a complaint against the head constable and other police personnel at the spot, sub-inspector Sinimol, too, lodged a complaint against Ashutosh and his colleagues. An FIR has been registered against the Navy personnel and further inquiry is on.
