Writer Thoppil Mohammed Meeran (74) breathed his last in Tirunelveli's Pettai due to natural causes, on Monday.

Hailing from Kanyakumari, his Sahitya Akademi win for Saayvu Naarkaali (Recliner) dealing with a Muslim fishermen hamlet is no surprise, given his first-hand experience of the premise. This novel was also televised in Doordarshan.

The writers fraternity bereaved Mohammed Meeran's demise.
