The deceased, Pavitha (23) had jumped into a well in a bid to commit suicide after a quarrel with her husband Sanjay (28). She was rescued by her neighbours and rushed to Vellore government medical college hospital, where she succumbed on Saturday.
Sanjay, son of Sampath Kumar of Kalanipakkam village, had married Pavitha, daughter of Rajendran, who was also a relative of Kumar, despite objection from the girl’s side. The two families were not on good terms for quite some time.
Sanjay, who was a police constable at Avadi, returned home only on weekends and these visits were often marked by quarrels between him and his wife. After one such incident, Pavitha took the extreme step.
Pavitha’s father Rajendran had complained to Pallikonda police about suspicions in his Pavitha’s death due to which the police apprehended Sanjay for questioning.
After an autopsy was done, her father refused to accept Pavitha’s body, saying that it was the responsibility of her husband’s family. Sanjay’s family too refused to accept the body as the husband was being quizzed by the cops.
Finally, the police managed to convince Sanjay’s family to accept Pavitha’s body while a magisterial enquiry into the suicide was ordered by the Sub Collector as the couple were married for less than five years. Further investigations are on.
