Thereafter, students could choose either a language subject or English at the beginning of the academic year soon after the school reopens. The choice to take up either English or another language will be applicable for both Science and Commerce. Subjects would also be reduced by five and total aggregate marks would be 500 instead of 600. Class 9 and 10 students will not have Language II and English II paper in the coming academic year.
A senior Education Department official told DT Next on Friday that the new exam pattern was discussed in a recent meeting where officials from the Directorate of Government Examination and Directorate of School Education participated. At present, Class 11 and 12 syllabus consists of six subjects, including one language paper and an English paper.
“There was a consensus on how students were under too much stress, especially during exams. Therefore, the pattern change recommendation would be sent to the State government,” he said. “Class 9 and 10 students might not have Tamil and English second paper examination,” the official stated.
However, PK Illamaran, association president, Tamil Nadu Teacher’s Association said, “Now, English medium students will not omit Tamil and Tamil medium students will avoid English. This will not serve the policy of the implementation of twin-subjects.” He added that if the government decides to do away with Tamil II and English II exams for Class 9 and 10, students would never learn grammar the proper way.
