Went through mental agony after eviction: Nallakannu

Nallakannu, who is known for his probity in public life, was allotted the rental house at CIT Nagar in T Nagar in 2006, while the family of Congress leader and former home minister Kakkan was provided with a rent-free house in the same quarters by late Chief Minister M G Ramachandran in 1984.

“I went through mental agony when the TNHB issued an eviction notice. I have no issues with the government not allotting another house to me. But they should provide one for Kakkan’s family,” he told reporters.

On Friday, Nallakannu shifted to another rented house at KK Nagar. The TNHB has planned to redevelop its rental houses at CIT Nagar. Meanwhile, the TNHB’s decision has evoked strong criticism from the Opposition parties.

Condemning the ‘eviction’, DMK president M K Stalin said, “The senior communist leader of Tamil Nadu who lived a life of rebellion and sacrifice has been living in the rented of TNHB for 12 years now. Officials have ordered him to vacate the place in the pretext of developing a new project there.”

“He vacated the place immediately. His trait of respecting the government is admirable. Evicting a leader of such a trait is highly condemnable.”

“TNHB houses are allocated to leaders as a mark of respect for their probity in public life,” Stalin remarked, urging the government, in his capacity as Leader of Opposition, to immediately allot a house to the 94-year-old leader without troubling him.

CPI state secretary R Mutharasan also condemned the State government. “With the TNHB issuing a notice suddenly without providing any other alternatives, Nallakannu was forced to shift to another house at KK Nagar paying very high rent. This government lacks a humanitarian approach,”he said.
