Officials later claimed only 800 such cards were recovered and said a detailed report would be submitted to the District Collector and an inquiry would also be made. The cards belonged to the residents of Kattimedu, Adhirengam and Sekal villages. Sources said they were original cards meant for distribution. Initially, the people there said that there were 3,000 cards and interestingly, many from the village found their cards and took them away.

Tiruthuraipoondi Tashildar Rajan Babu said the cards were issued long ago through agencies, but there were no postal marks on them. Later, VAO Abbas Manthiri lodged a complaint with the Thiruthuraipoondi police, along with a list of the cards found.
