Contract not renewed for 9k TN govt teachers over poll code, pay withheld

More than 9,000 government contractual school teachers in TNadu under the Central scheme are in the soup as their service extension order is yet to be issued. Also, the teachers are yet to receive their April salaries. An official said the government would look into this issue only after May 27 since the model code of conduct is in place.

A total of 6,872 teachers are from Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and of them, 1,598 are PG teachers taking classes in high and middle schools. In addition, salaries for 1,283 teachers recruited through Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) have also been withheld.

A senior SSA official told DT Next on Thursday that the teacher’s contract period is renewed every three months. Accordingly, the teachers’ services were extended in March but not beyond that. He said when the teachers approached the School Education Department to enquire, authorities said since their contracts were yet to be renewed, payments could not be made. “The government is also thinking of regularising their jobs since most teachers worked for more than five years in different places,” he added.

Tamil Nadu Teachers Association (TTA) president PK Illamaran said the government should immediately look into the matter. He also pointed out to the erratic extension order in the past few years.
