Tension in Sivaganga after gang hacks AMMK union secy
A 38-year-old political functionary was hacked to death in Sivaganga on Saturday. The murder happened near Kalkurichi bridge in Manamadurai at around 7.30 am, sources said, adding that four suspects were picked up for interrogation in connection with it.

The man, identified as Saravanan of Avarankadu, the union secretary of AMMK for Sivaganga West, was out on his morning walk on Saturday, when an armed gang followed him on a bike. They hacked him, killing him on the spot. Following preliminary inquiries, police suspect that personal motive was suspected behind the killing.
Sivaganga Superintendent of Police T Jayachandran inspected the spot and held inquiries. When contacted, the SP said there were various suspected motives, and that they were investigating all angles before coming to a conclusion. Sipcot police have filed a case in connection with the murder and special teams have been formed to nab the accused, the SP added.
Angered by the incident, AMMK cadre thronged Sivaganga Government Medical College Hospital, where Saravanan’s body was taken for post mortem examination.
Initially, his relatives refused to accept the body seeking immediate action to arrest the accused. Later, however, they relented after the police managed to convince them. Adequate police force has been deployed in the vicinity of thehospital.
Before joining AMMK, Saravanan was with its parent party, AIADMK, and was the councillor of Ward 13 of Manamadurai, sources said.
