Suicide bid by mother-son duos in Vellore, Madurai

In two separate incidents owing to family disputes, two women along with their sons attempted suicide in Vellore and Madurai on Monday.

While both the woman and her 4-year-old son died in Vellore, in Madurai case the son is battling for life in a hospital


In in the first incident, a mother and her four-year son committed suicide by jumping into a farm well over a simmering family dispute near Pernambut on Monday. According to police, Rubina (30), daughter of Rukku, was married to Pandian of the same locality a few years ago. The couple had a four-year-old son Mukesh. However, the couple quarrelled frequently over various issues. Rubina, who was unable to bear the mental tension caused by altercations, went to live with her mother at Mathur village.


On Sunday, Pandian visited his mother-in-law’s house and had taken Mukesh for a walk along with him, police said. However, when he came to drop his son once again a quarrel erupted between the couple. Following this, Pandian had left the place.


On the same night, Rubina and Mukesh had went missing and immediately Rukku alerted the locals. The locals searched for the woman and her son and finally found body of the woman in a farm well nearby. Based on the information, fire and rescue service personnel rushed to the spot and retrieved Rubina’s body and at the time of going to press search for the body of Mukesh, who was also presumed to be dead, was going on. Pernambut police are investigating.


In the second incident, a woman and her 28-year-old son attempted suicide by consuming poison in their house on Veerakaliamman Kovil Street in Sivagangai on Monday. While the woman, Mariammal (65), died on the spot, her son, Sornabalan (28), was shifted to the Sivaganga GH, where he was battling for life. Preliminary inquiries revealed that family dispute is suspected to be the reason behind the extreme step taken by Sornabalan and Mariammal.
