A total of 100 seats in the upcoming Karur Medical college, around 250 seats in Tirunelveli Medical college and 100 seats in Madurai Medical College and Hospital have been approved by the Centre,” said Health Minister C Vijaybaskar, on the side-lines of an event on Friday.
He also said that the State health department is yet to decide on implementing the weaker section quota in medical sections. “The amendment has not been brought up yet, thus, the existing 69 per cent reservation remains unaffected. The state will inform the Union Ministry on 10 per cent of the seats for the quota after discussion with the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary on the same,” added the health minister.
As per the current regulations, the existing quota of 69 percent reserved seats and 21 percent of open admission category will continue in the State. “We will seek additional seats to accommodate students under the new quota” he added. However, as against the earlier announcements to conduct MBBS applications and counselling online, the Directorate of Medical Education will conduct counselling through offline mode.
