Salem expressway: CPI flays Centre’s appeal

CPI state secretary R Mutharasan on Saturday criticised the Union government over its decision to appeal against the Madras High Court order which quashed the land acquisition order for the Salem-Chennai expressway project.

In an appeal to both the Central and State governments, he said the project should be dropped. “Otherwise, we would organise farmers to stage protest against the proposed road,” he said.


Speaking to reporters in Thanjavur, Mutharasan also demanded the hydrocarbon exploration projects in the Cauvey delta districts proposed by the Union Government be scrapped. 


Stating that there was no Kuruvai paddy cultivation in the delta districts for the last seven years, he said there were concerns over farmers skipping the same this year also due to lack of water in Mettur reservoir. M A Bharathi, CPI district secretary, Kalyanasundaram, CPI deputy district secretary were present.
