Two accidents in Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi dists, 6 dead

Three passengers were killed, and 58 others suffered injuries after the private bus they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a ditch near Peddureddipatti in Virudhunagar district on Tuesday.

When contacted, Virudhunagar Superintendent of Police M Rajarajan said the victims, who belonged to Palakkad in Kerala, were returning after visiting Thiruvananthapuram and Kanniyakumari. The mishap took place around 12.45 am. The bus skidded, smashed a portion of metal beam crash barrier and plunged off the road, he said.


Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sattur taluk, Ramakrishnan said, “Among the injured victims, 14 were treated as in-patients at the Virudhunagar Government Hospital. The three deceased victims were identified as Petta (65), Sarojini (63), and A Nikila (8).


Sources said the injured victims have decided to seek treatment in their native place. Based on a complaint lodged by Gopalakrishnan, one of the tour organisers, Sattur taluk police have filed a case under Sections 279, 337 and 304 (A) of the IPC.


Three killed in accident on ECR

In another accident, three persons were killed after their car hit the rear of a TNSTC bus near Surankudi in Thoothukudi district on Tuesday. The mishap took place on the East Coast Road (ECR) around 11.50 am. While A Selvaganesh (40), branch manager of a nationalised bank in Uchinatham, Ramanathapuram and G Nagaraj (42), security guard of the branch, succumbed to injuries on the spot, car driver Alaguraj (45) died on the way to hospital, sources said. Vilathikulam Deputy Superintendent of Police Jeyakumar inspected the spot. Surankudi police have filed a case. Further inquiries are on.
