Clothes meant for free distribution seized in Erode, two held

Revenue department officials on Sunday seized a huge consignment of sarees and dhotis meant to be distributed to the public at PDS shops under the State government’s saree and dhoti distribution scheme.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of officials led by Erode Tahsildar Balasubramaniam carried out a vehicle-check near Old Railway Station road in the district on Sunday.


They intercepted an auto rickshaw and found sarees and dhotis originally meant for supplying to the public. The officials subsequently seized the vehicle.


Inquiries revealed that the vehicle was driven by Muthy (36) and its owner Vairamuthu (48)-both hailing from different localities in Tiruchy. They had allegedly smuggled the dhotis and sarees from Thuraiyur into Erode district.


There were around 5,300 dhotis and sarees in 53 sacks. The officials handed the duo over to the Surampatty police, who then registered a case and arrested them. Furtherinquiries are on.
