Talking to reporters, Assistant Director, Directorate of Medical Education, Sabitha, who accompanied the team during the inspection, said the State government has handed over the required land for construction of the hospital to authorities concerned and the project would take off as scheduled.

Initially, a compound wall around the site which measures 224 acres would be raised at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore. The compound wall construction would be completed in three months’ time once works are taken up, she said.

“AIIMS Madurai is a big and significant project, which would be completed in another four years. The high-level team, which reviewed the availability of basic amenities such as water, road infrastructure and electricity at the site, has expressed its happiness,” Sabitha said.

The BJP-led Central government gave its nod for constructing the AIIMS Hospital in Madurai last year. In January this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the hospital in the presence of Governor Banwarilal Purohit and Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in Madurai.

The project, which would have 750 beds, 16 operation theatres and other necessary infrastructure, would be completed in a period of 45 months, sources said.
