At present, only Class 12 medical aspirants from government schools were given NEET training by experts across the State. Of the 17,000 students from government and government aided schools who have appeared for NEET, only a total of 2,557 candidates have cleared it.
Though the results look better than the last year’s figure of 1,337 students, who cleared the test, alike last year it is estimated that only about 10 students might get into medical colleges for MBBS course this year.
A senior official from the School Education Department, who monitors the NEET coaching centres, told DT Next that the NEET results have made it clear that students need some more training at veryearly stage.
“Therefore, the officials are working to conduct NEET training for the students at Class 11 itself so that it would be very easy for them to revise all the subjects thoroughly when they go to Class 12,” he added.
Stating that the government has allocated more than Rs 3 crore for free NEET coaching to the students, the official said that this year the funds would be doubly earmarked.
According to him, the management of government higher secondary schools across the State would be instructed to prepare a list of medical aspirants, who study in Class 11 and send it to the authorities concerned.
“During initial phase, NEET training will be given to interested candidates during the weekends,” he said adding, “the officials also working out to send experts to the schools to coach the students.”
Pointing out that more than 600 students, who trained through residential course last year, have qualified in NEET, the official said that based on the feedback, training this year would be much more comprehensive. “This training will be very useful for the students living in far flung rural areas of the State,” he added.
