According to sources, Balaiya (50), a coolie near Lalgudi, served as the watchman for a TASMAC outlet at Puvalur during the night hours. On Wednesday night, he went to work, but did not return on Thursday morning. Family members, who then went to the outlet in search of Balaiya, were shocked to see him lying dead with a severe head injury.
Upon information to the Lalgudi police, a team led by Inspector Muthukumar rushed to the spot and conducted investigation to find that there was a theft attempt in the TASMAC outlet.
The outlet’s lock was found broken and it is suspected that Balaiya was allegedly attacked with an iron rod on the head when he attempted to prevent the gang from looting. A case has been registered and a search is on for the attackers.
Meanwhile, the outlet’s supervisor, Kannan, who inspected the spot told the police that the workers left the outlet at midnight. Though there was no cash in the shop, goods worth Rs 6 lakh was stored there, he added.
