Talking to news persons here, Kandasamy said that he had convened a meeting of officials and plastic manufacturers and sellers in which the ill-effect of plastic products was explained in detail and sought them to cooperate with the government in imposing a ban on it as done by the Tamil Nadu government.

It was earlier announced that plastic would be banned in the Union Territory from July 1. However, on a request from the plastic manufacturers and sellers, who sought some time to sell the products available with them, one month time was given to them, the minister said, adding that the ban would certainly be imposed from August 1.

It may be noted that though the Puducherry government had announced ban on plastic several times earlier, it could not be implemented because of agitations staged by the producers and sellers.

Speaking at a public function held earlier this month to mark the World Environment Day, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy stressed the need to create awareness among the people to protect the environment in the Union Territory. He had then said steps would be taken to eradicate plastic without giving much trouble to the manufacturers and their workers.
