According to sources, the election for the chairman, secretary and executive committee of the Karunthattankudi Dravidian Cooperative Urban Bank in Thanjavur was scheduled on Saturday.
While nominations were reportedly received for as many as 11 positions six months ago, among them, two directors were elected unopposed and the polling for the remaining nine was hence scheduled to take place on Saturday. The cooperative society election was put on hold until then in view of the Lok Sabha election.
As per schedule, the election was planned to be held at the Corporation higher secondary school in Karanthai in the district, and poll official Ramachandran was performing preparatory works in the morning hours on Saturday.
Suddenly, a youth reportedly arrived at the spot and lifted the ballot boxes and ran away.
Upon information, DMK MLA Neelamegam came to the spot, and claimed that the boxes were taken away by the ruling party cadre fearing their failure in the scheduled election. DMK cadre soon assembled on the road and blocked the vehicular movement.
A section of AIADMK and AMMK cadre also assembled at the spot upon coming to know of the missing ballot boxes.
Receiving information, the Thanjavur East police led by DSP Ravichandran rushed to the spot and held talks with the protesting party cadre. After assurance by the police, they dispersed from the spot.
