Sources from the School Education Department said that as per the Tamil Nadu Private School Regulation Act 1973, all school managements should ensure availability of basic amenities, including drinking water facilities and setting up hygienic toilets for the students.
A circular, which was issued by the Education Department, said that instead of closing schools, the management should find alternatives to deal with the crisis, adding that strict action would be taken against private schools if they closed down.
Therefore, the school management should not close institutions citing lack of drinking water facilities as this would affect the students’ curriculum. In addition, schools were also instructed not to force students to pay for water, even if it was purchased privately.
All education officers have been instructed to monitor all private schools in their respective districts and ensure that the schools abide by the rules. A circular in this regard has been reportedly sent to the schools as well.
Sources from the Education Department further said that not a single government and its aided schools have been closed due to drinking water crisis.
