Fisheries officials in Kanniyakumari said on Thursday that the fishermen hailing from Chinna Muttom coastal hamlet in the district had set sail into the sea for a fishing trip on Monday morning. The fishermen should have returned to the shore on Tuesday morning as per their schedule.

As they did not return till Wednesday morning, their family members lodged a complaint with fisheries department seeking assistance to trace them.

The fisheries officials in turn sought the help of the Costal Security Group personnel of Thoothukudi station.

A Costal Security Group patrol boat and a salvage team immediately launched a search operation. The teams traced the missing fishermen stranded over 35 nautical miles from Thoothukudi coast. The fishermen were found starving without food and drinking water mid sea.

The salvage team with the assistance of the Costal Security Group personnel towed the repaired mechanised fishing trawler along with the crew to the coast on Wednesday night.
