According to the police, the girl was found dead in an abandoned well that is only a short distance away from her house in Vilankurichi in the wee hours of Monday. The police seized a dhoti and a liquor bottle near the well.
According to sources, as the husband of Kanjana (the girl’s mother), Kanagaraj, was away, she stayed in her mother’s house located in the same neighbourhood.
On the night before the incident, Kanjana had slept with her daughter in a room, while a few of her relatives slept on the verandah of the house. Past midnight, the accused, Ragunathan, consumed liquor near the well and took away the little girl with an intention to sexually abuse her.
However, the girl woke up and began to call for her mother. In a bid to make the girl silent, Ragunathan gagged her, but she fell unconscious. He then threw her into the well with dirty stagnant water, and returned to sleep as if nothing happened.
The police retrieved the body of the girl and a post mortem reportedly revealed that she did not bear any injuries and died only by drowning.
The accused also confessed to the crime.
The Peelamedu police have registered a case and further inquiries are on.
