Speeding car kills motorist, pedestrian in Tirupur

According to the police, V Muthunayagam, working in a textile firm was heading home in Uthukuli from Thekkalur on a two-wheeler, when the incident occurred around midnight. Returning after night shift duty, Muthunayagam’s vehicle was rammed from behind by the high-end car at Avinashilingampalayam near Avinashi on Tirupur Road. The car then ran over Marudasalam, from Mariamman Kovil Street in the Avinashilingampalayam neighbourhood, who was walking along the roadside.

The car, however, did not stop after the incident and sped away. The public, who witnessed the incident, gave a chase and finally intercepted the vehicle past Anaipudur area. Tension prevailed when the public besieged the car and caught hold of the person behind the wheels. Upon receiving information, the Avinashi police rushed to the spot and identified the luxury car driver as L Vibin (29) from the same neighbourhood. The police, however, confirmed that he was not drunk.

Meanwhile, Muthunayagam succumbed to injuries on the spot, while Marudasalam was rushed to Avinashi Government Hospital. After first aid, he was then taken to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), but he died on the way.

A case has been registered against Vibin for causing accident leading to death due to negligence. The police have also recovered CCTV footage from the scene of the incident and further investigations are on. In a similar incident involving a luxury car in August last year, the speeding car reportedly ploughed into a crowd waiting at a bus stop, killing seven persons-including three women-on the spot in Coimbatore.
