Eligible students: 4,080 candidates from Chennai on medical rank list

With three toppers among the top 10 in the MBBS/BDS State rank list, Chennai topped the district wise rank list with the maximum number of eligible candidates in the State. The rank list was released by Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar in Chennai on Saturday.

The maximum number of eligible students are from Chennai (4,080), while 2,023 and 1,833 students are from Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur respectively. As many as 1,683 students from Salem have made it to the rank list, while 1,516 students are from Coimbatore.


Among the top 10 rank holders in government quota, three students each are from Chennai and Coimbatore, while one student is from Bengaluru. 


In all, 1,38,997 students applied for NEET this year in Tamil Nadu, of which 59,785 cleared the exam. Out of the 35,013 applications submitted, 31,353 have been accepted, which includes 11,741 boys and 19,612 girls.


Out of the total 29,007 management quota applications, 25,651 applications were accepted. In this category, all the top 10 rank holders are from other States. Interestingly, the top five candidates have an equal score of 685.


Shruthi K from Tiruvallur, who scored 685 marks and 57th all India rank in NEET 2019, topped the MBBS State rank list in government quota. Aswin Raj AK from Anthiyur secured second rank with 677 marks, while Elamathi V from Coimbatore stood third with 676 marks. In the management quota, Sodam Sri Nandan Reddy topped the list with 685 marks, followed by P Mahesh Anand.


Releasing the rank list, Health Minister Vijaya Baskar said that the State has got an additional 350 MBBS seats this year, with 150 seats in the new government medical college in Karur and an increase of 100 seats in Tirunelveli and Madurai government colleges.


“The State has 5,400 seats in 23 government colleges this year, which includes 3,250 seats in State government medical colleges, 150 seats in Rajah Muthiah Medical College affiliated to Annamalai University, 100 seats in ESIC medical college, 100 seats in Perundurai and 1,800 seats in self-financing colleges under the State quota,” he added.


The Minister added that though the application process was online, the counselling would be through offline mode to ensure proper verification of applications and nativity of students.


Under government quota, 13,714 applications were received from the 2018 batch students, while 17, 618 applications were received from 2019 batch. Though more number of government school students have cleared NEET this year compared to last year, repeat candidates are likely to secure more seats.
