This incident led to tension with members of Christian community demanding police to arrest the culprits at the earliest. The two statues were placed inside a glass shield at the entrance of ‘Vanachinnappar’ Church for Catholics at Nagalur near Anthiyur in Erode district.
On Monday around 7am, devotees who came to offer prayers in the church were shocked to find the glass boxes broken and the two statues vandalized.
Following this, a large number of Christians from Anthiyur, Thavuttupalayam and Nagalur localities gathered at the spot triggering tension.
Thereafter led by the church priest Joseph Amalraj, they lodged a complaint to Anthiyur police demanding arrest of unknown persons, who desecrated the statues.
On receiving the complaint, the police assured action and cops have been deployed in the church as a security measure to prevent any further untoward incidents. A case has been registered and a search is on to nab the culprits.
