2,000 to attend Smart India Hackathon final

As a part of the national initiative, Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2019 (Hardware) was held here to provide an opportunity to students to work on challenges faced within the private sector organizations for some of the top companies in the world, thus helping them hire the best minds across the nation.

The SIH is jointly organized by Union Ministry of Human Resources Development and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).


While unveiling the programme at Vel Tech on Monday, Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman AICTE said that this was the third consecutive year of Smart India Hackathon, the world’s largest open hackathon.


“We are growing each year in terms of participation and solutions. We started the event in 2017 with participation of around 50,000 students, in 2018 the participants’ number rose to around one lakh. This year, the magnitude has grown bigger and around two lakh students have participated this year”, he said.


According to him, the final of second part of Smart India Hackathon-2019, Hardware edition is being conducted from July 8 to 12.


Mohit Gambhir, Director MHRD Innovation Cell and Coordinator Smart India Hackathon 2019 said this year more than 1.2 lakh students from 2,235 colleges sent their entries for 198 problem statements, submitted by more than 40 industries and nine central government ministries and various government departments.


For the final around, 2,000 participants from 250 teams of 178 different colleges are participating, including IIT’s and NIIT’s, he added.


Gambhir said that in this hackathon edition, issues on which students need to innovate are based on agriculture and rural development, food technology, waste management, clean water, renewable energy, smart communication, sports and fitness, sustainable environment, smart textile and smart cities areas.
