The Cauvery Delta Protection Movement, a consortium of representatives from several political parties, which met in Thanjavur on Tuesday to discuss the next course of action against the hydrocarbon extraction project in the State, resolved to intensify their protests in order to make the government withdraw the project and also have planned to stage a rally in front of all District Collectorates on July 23.
The meeting that was chaired by the State secretary of the Tamil Nadu Farmers Association (affiliated to the CPI), V Duraimanikam, had the participating members raise concerns on the State’s stance as well as the Union government’s on hydrocarbon extraction project, and the results of the protests organised by people from various walks of life. The meeting discussed on intensifying the protests until the government at the Centre and the State are left with no option but to withdraw the projects opposed by the people of Tamil Nadu, especially the farming community.
The meeting also resolved to insist the Central and State governments to declare the Cauvery delta as an agriculture-protected zone and asked the State government to pass an order by cancelling the hydrocarbon projects. The meeting also raised concerns about foisting cases against those who protest against the anti-people projects and demanded to withdraw such cases against the protesters.
The meeting further demanded the Centre to instruct the Karnataka government to give Tamil Nadu its due share of water as per orders of the Cauvery Management Board.
The participants also demanded the State police to allow farmers to hold protests against the hydrocarbon extraction project as almost all the political parties and people from different walks of life have realised the evil impact of these projects, they said. They also asked the police to join them in the protests if they so desired.
Pressing these demands, the movement has decided to stage a rally against the hydrocarbon projects at the Collectorates of Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Villupuram and Karaikal districts on July 23. They also have decided to submit petitions with the respective District Collectors after the rally.
