After the scrutiny of nomination papers filed by 14 candidates including DMK, AIADMK, PMK and MDMK candidates began on Tuesday, Vaiko’s nomination was accepted by the returning officer - Tamil Nadu Assembly secretary - after clarifying a few doubts.
Nominations of seven candidates including Vaiko, DMK’s P Wilson, K Shanmugham and Elango, A Mohammad John, N Chandrashekaran (both AIADMK) and Anbumani Ramadoss (PMK), were accepted while four others were rejected.
Doubts were raised over the acceptance of Vaiko’s nomination as he was recently convicted in a sedition case by a special court. As there was apprehension about his nomination not being accepted, Vaiko had asked DMK president MK Stalin to field an alternate candidate from his party and DMK’s NR Elango filed his nomination on Monday.
