In order to express dissatisfaction against the hydrocarbon extraction project, which the farmers in the delta region claim to be an anti-people project, people have been over the days staging a series of protests.
One such protesting group, The Movement against Destruction, had announced a protest in front of the Thanjavur Collectorate on Friday but the police had denied them permission. “We will stage a protest as per plan,” the movement president, KKR Lenin, however, said.
He also said that the movement has approached the Madurai bench of the Madras High court seeking permission to stage a protest.
Meanwhile, Lenin condemned the State government for indirectly supporting the ONGC that is exploring hydrocarbon extraction in the State.
“The State government has asked sanitary staff to wear uniforms with ONCG emblem and this is one evidence”, Lenin said.
Meanwhile, farmers have planned to stage an indefinite hunger strike in Thanjavur from Friday to condemn the government for supporting corporate firms with regard to the anti-people projects.
It may be noted that the farmers and the coordination committee had announced protests in the districts of Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Karaikal against hydrocarbon project on July 23.
