According to the police, Arumugam (30), a native of Guruparapalli village near Shoolagiri, was riding a vehicle while talking on the phone, which he had inserted inside his helmet, on Krishnagiri-Bengaluru National Highways when the incident happened.
He might have been talking on the phone for a long time causing the phone to heat up, said the police. After the cell phone exploded, he lost balance and fell off the vehicle. He suffered several injuries on his face.
Passers-by, who witnessed the incident, took Arumugam, who was in an unconscious state, to a private hospital in Shoolagiri. After first aid was provided, he was then shifted to Krishnagiri Government Hospital for further treatment.
On receipt of information, the Shoolagiri police rushed to the spot and held inquiries. The police said that the phone which blasted was a branded one. The victim had regained consciousness, but is still in a state of shock and continues to be under critical medication, they added.
Further investigations are on. While many cell phone explosions have been reported while the devices were charging, this incident has created fear as Arumugam was merely talking on the phone.
