Body cameras to monitor Coimbatore traffic police personnel interaction with motorists

In a bid to ensure better transparency in the system, traffic cops in the city have been provided with body cameras to record their conversations with motorists.

The handy cameras are fixed onto the uniform of the traffic cops. Launching the initiative, Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan distributed about 70 body cameras to thepolicemen.


“These cameras will be fitted to the shirt of those cops involved in vehicle checks. In about twenty cameras, the images captured by them will be transmitted live to the control room, whereas the remaining fifty cameras will be given to those cops who are on security duty during rallies and public meetings. These cameras will have battery back-up for eight hours,” Sharan said after launching the initiative.


The use of body-worn cameras reportedly helps to curb corruption among police, bring about transparency in challan process and fix accountability on the public indulging in violence against traffic cops. The body camera is also intended to end the issue of police using


un-parliamentary words against traffic offenders as they too can now be pulled up.


Pointing out that many crimes are being cracked with the help of CCTV footage, Sharan stated that a total of 4,500 surveillance cameras were fixed in the city limits.Sharan also said that the Tiruchy Road will likewise be brought under similarsurveillance soon.
