Referring to the tabling of the bills amending 44 labour laws in four heads in the ongoing budget session of the Parliament, a joint statement issued after the meeting of trade unions listed out the various acts and said that though the Central Pay Commission has fixed Rs 18,000 as minimum wage, the Union Cabinet has fixed the national minimum wages at Rs 4,628.
The joint statement issued by LPF, CITU, AITUC, HMS and AICCTU also alleged that the amendment proposes to amend the eight-hour job duration and leave it to the Centre to fix the working hours.
As per the unions, the amendments would allow the managements to deny bonus to employees for the first seven years, impose penalty in bonus and deny the right of employees to know the profit and loss accounts of the companies.
Condemning the amendments, which they alleged, would deprive all the rights of the workers, the trade unions have announced an agitation on August 2. They intend to protest the dilution of the labour laws and divestment of public sector undertakings like Salem Steel Plant and IntegralCoach Factory.
