NTK targets majors on minority issues

The double standards adopted by the AIADMK in helping to pass the Triple Talaq Bill and that of the DMK in supporting the NIA Bill in Parliament has created much heartburn among the Muslim minority, which is now judiciously being capitalised by the Naam Tamilar Katchi in campaigning for the Vellore Lok Sabha polls.

“It is not so beneficial to Muslim women. The fact that the BJP government has touched Mohammed Nabi given Muslim law has enraged the community,” said former councillor Meeranji C Saleem of Pernambut.

He said the local Muslim vote will swing in favour of the DMK not because of this, but due to Karunanidhi using tanners to provide jobs for many local residents years ago. “That sense of gratitude still prevails,” he added.

But a DMK functionary seeking anonymity said, “But this might be futile as a group in the DMK who are totally vexed with the attitude of DMK Treasurer and candidate Kathir Anand’s father Duraimurugan toward party cadre is silently working todefeat him.”

Former MLA Wallajah Hassan when asked said, “they passed the law without properly understanding how triple talaq works. Muslim marriages are social contracts and not based on divinity. It is not a question of a man saying the words thrice but a long-drawn process where the duration between intonation of successive talaqs may take months as the local jamaat will take all effort to keep the couple together. Muslim women too have a similar facility called Qulah,” he added.

“But, the DMK is unable to capitalise on the AIADMK’s blunder as it supported the anti-muslim NIA Bill” added Hassan. It is this quandary which is being capitalised by NTK chief coordinator Seeman and other speakers. “This sudden state of affairs has come in handy for our party,” said NTK candidate Deepalakshmi. NTK is attracting attention as seen from a election procession led by Seeman on Wednesday.
