Tamil Nadu Government’s co-operative, aavin is one of Tamil Nadu’s  milk producers. It sells 30 lakh litre milk every day. The cost and quality of aavin milk is better than other private milk parlours which makes it the people’s brand.

Aavin milk’s cost was increased in the year 2014. The deceased Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha increased it by Rs 10. For the past five years it was not increased.

It was discussed among the milk producers that the cost of production, especially the fodder cost has increased, making it impossible for the milk producers to maintain the livestock.

Tamil Nadu milk producers’ welfare association General Secretary M G Rajendran told that the cost of hay has increased a great deal. In 2014, 25 kilogram of hay was Rs 120 and the same quantity costs Rs 250 currently.

He also mentioned the statistics of the past years which shows the cost of production has increased by 63%.

He emphasized that the farmers can survive their livelihood only if the procurement price is increased.

Regarding this Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy met Procurement Co-operative Society officer to negotiate on behalf of the milk producers. This negotiation resulted with the conclusion that the prices hike will happen after Vellore Lok Sabha elections.

The increase in procurement price will lead to increase in selling price. To estimate the amount to be increased the Procurement Co-operative Society minister K D Rajendra Balaji and officers are discussing.

Concerning this Rajendran said ,”As the cost of production is increasing we have requested to increase the procurement price. We have suggested that cow milk cost to be increased from Rs 27 to Rs 42 and buffalo milk cost from Rs 29 to Rs 50. It is expected that the prices rise will be established after the Vellore Lok Saba election”.
