Officials believe that miscreants had set the garbage mound on fire to collect iron scraps. “Chances of a natural fire are minimal as it is not too hot. So an inquiry is on to know if someone set fire to garbage mound with an ulterior motive,” said an official, who visited the dumpyard on Friday.
The fire, which broke out on Thursday evening raged through the whole night burning vast stretches of garbage yard into ashes. More than 50 fire fighting personnel battled till Friday morning to bring it under control.
Though the fire has been put out, thick fumes continue to emerge out of the garbage. Not to take chances, fire tender vehicles sprayed water to prevent further spread of fire.
Following the last massive fire break in March, the civic body adopted source segregation to reduce the amount of waste reaching the yard. Also pathways were created to prevent spread of fire, in case of a break out. Indian Air Force (IAF) Station, Sulur, deployed helicopters to douse the fire.
Corporation Commissioner J Sravan Kumar, who visited the spot on Friday said that further efforts would be taken to prevent fires in the garbage yard.
