Tamil Nadu Open University to have Learner Support Centres in 90 colleges

For the first time, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to establish ‘Learner Support Centres and Examination Centres’ in 90 colleges comprising of Government, Arts and Science that are affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Open University.

According to the authorities of the Higher Education Department, the learner support centre is designed to support and enhance the educational and learning efforts of distance learners.


A senior official from the Tamil Nadu Open University said that candidates who take distance education courses are only given study material. “However, after the establishment of learner support centres, the students can take their new courses and also attend classes at centres near their location,” he added.


Stating that the Centres will also provides avenues for face to face interactions among peers, learners and university staff, the official said all the centres will have experts to clarify the doubts of the students immediately.


The official stated that the centres will facilitate students to get a better understanding of their study materials with the help of academic counsellors and gain independent learning by means of educational technologies.


The official pointed out that the centres will have audio-video facilities which will help students get access to video lectures uploaded in the university’s website.


On the setting up of exam centres in the affiliated colleges of Tamil Nadu Open University, the official said students need not travel long distances to write their exams. “The centres in the colleges would be beneficial to students, especially women”, he added.


Both the learner support centres and examination centres in the colleges will ensure the admission of students and publication of their results. “Certificate and other relevant documents including transfer certificate at the end of the course could be obtained in these centres,” he concluded.
