4 held for break-ins, 200 sovereigns recovered

In a crackdown launched in the wake of a series of house break-in cases in Tirunelveli district over the past few days, special teams formed by the district police achieved a breakthrough on Tuesday when they arrested four people and recovered over 200 sovereigns of gold, among other items worth several lakhs of rupees, from the accused.

Investigations revealed the accused in the theft cases to be K Sermathurai (25), S Mani alias Balakrishnan (31), M Sermathurai (26) and S Suyambulingam (29), sources said. The stolen properties, which have been recovered from the accused, include 223 sovereigns of gold and 500 grams of silver articles. Two bikes used by the accused were also seized, sources said.


Initially, two members of the gang were nabbed, and upon interrogating the duo, they confessed that the other two as having abetted the crime. They targeted locked houses after keeping a watch in residential areas, sources said.


The accused are reportedly habitual offenders who indulged in break-ins in over twenty houses under the limits of the Panagudi, Sivanthipatti, Tirunelveli taluk, Perumalpuram and Melapalayam police.


The accused were remanded to judicial custody and are being lodged in the Palayamkottai central prison, sources said.
