Kallar reclamation schools to get infrastructure boost

The State government has sanctioned funds to improve the infrastructure, including smart classrooms and modern benches, at Kallar reclamation schools in three districts in the State.

According to officials of Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department that runs Kallar reclamation schools, “There are 38 higher secondary schools run by Kallar reclamation Board. Among them, 23 schools would get smart classrooms to be setup by ELCOT at the cost of Rs 1.05 crore.”


State government with the intention to ensure educational advancement of people belonging to Piramalai Kallar community has been running Kallar reclamations schools in Madurai, Theni and Dindigul, where the community people are predominantly present. There are 295 Kallar reclamation schools functioning and nearly 25,000 students are studying in the schools.


Compared to other government schools, Kallar reclamation schools are given special attention, said the officials. Special cash incentives are provided by the School Education department to increase the admission in the schools.


Officials also said that after the AIADMK government took over in 2011, lower kindergarten English medium classes were started in 15 Kallar primary schools, five schools in each of the three districts. A total of 818 students are benefitting from these classes. The English medium classes will also be extended to upper primary classes in all the 15 schools from the next academic year. Further, the government is also conducting communication and spoken English classes to improve the skills of students studying in higher secondary classes and nearly 3,500 students are benefitting from it.


As many as 213 Kallar reclamation schools will also get modern benches attached with chairs to accommodate two students each bench and they will be procured at the cost of Rs 4.12 crore. Government has also decided to improve the laboratory facilities in 10 Kallar Higher Secondary schools at the cost of Rs 67.5 lakh.
