Large number of tourists who thronged the falls to take bath returned disappointed due to the temporary ban.

As it was a holiday weekend, tourists visited the falls in hordes on Saturday and Sunday. As many as 4,000 tourists turned up at the falls in the last two days alone.

However, heavy rains which poured out throughout Sunday night led to flooding on Monday. The falls, which remained shut for about two weeks due to flooding following torrential rains in Coimbatore region, was opened for public only on August 21.

Meanwhile, tourists thronged Aliyar and Valparai hills for the weekend. An official from the Forest Department said that tourists would be allowed into the falls once rains recede.

“Teams comprising anti-poaching watchers and Forest Department staff have been formed to maintain vigil and prevent tourists from trespassing into the forest cover,” said an official.

Similarly, The Nilgiris, too, received heavy rains and the sky remained cloudy since Monday morning.
