Tiruchy’s Bishop Emeritus Devotta no more
The Bishop Emeritus of Tiruchy Catholic diocese, Rev Antony Devotta, passed away in the wee hours of Tuesday after a cardiac arrest. His cadaver would be donated to the St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bengaluru.

Catholic institutes have declared a holiday on Wednesday in honour of the late bishop. Bishop Devotta was born on 30 June 1943, in Santhome in Chennai. He was ordained a priest on 27 August 27, 1971, and appointed Bishop of Tiruchy diocese in December, 12, 2000. He was the Vicar General of the Madras-Mylapore archdiocese before becoming the Bishop of Tiruchirappalli.
He resigned from the pastoral governance of the diocese of Tiruchirappalli on 14 July, 2018 at the age of 75. Antony Devotta was also Professor at the Sacred Heart Seminary, Poonamallee. The funeral will be held on at 10am on Wednesday at the St. Mary’s Cathedral in Tiruchy.
Bishop Devotta’s eyes were donated to St. Joseph’s Eye Hospital, Tiruchy, while his body has been donated to St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bengaluru for medical research. After the last rites, the mortal remains will be taken to Bengaluru.
