3 killed in Cuddalore as rain batters many dists
Three members of a family, including a child, were killed and five others suffered serious injuries after their tiled-roof house collapsed on them due to heavy rain at Kammiyanpettai village in the wee hours of Friday.

Police said the incident occurred when the victims were fast asleep in their house.
The mud wall of the tiled-roof house was heavily drenched due to heavy rain resulting in the collapse of the house.
The deceased have been identified as N. Mala, her daughter Maheswari and one-year-old grand-daughter Dhanashri.
The seriously injured persons have been admitted to the Government Hospital here. Further investigations are on.
Meanwhile, several parts of the delta region continued to receive moderate showers and schools remained closed in Tiruchy, Tiruvarur, Ariyalur and Pudukkottai districts.
The continuous rainfall is expected to support the farmers who have undertaken samba cultivation.
The northeast monsoon rain that started recently continues to lash the Cauvery delta region and heavy rain was witnessed in the coastal regions like Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukkottai from Thursday late evening. The Tiruchy, Karur, Perambalur and Ariyalur districts witnessed heavy rain during the late hours.
Water inundated many parts of Nagapattinam district as it rained heavily. Places like Vedharanyam, Sirkazhi and Mayiladuthural witnessed heavy rain. While Tiruvarur received 298.4 mm rainfall, Nannilam received 59.2 mm and Tiruvaruru town 58.4 mm. Since there was heavy rain in Valangaiman, Mannargudi, Thiruthuraipoondi and Muthupettai in the early hours of Friday, the Tiruvarur District Collector declared a holiday for the schools.
Meanwhile, in Ariyalur, the house of Elangovan in Senthurai was destroyed in the heavy rain that lashed across the district until Friday morning and the District Collector declared a holiday for schools.
Similarly, the rural parts of the Tiruchy district also received a good spell of rain than the urban areas. The Thuraiyur, Manapparai and Manachanallur areas received heavy rainfall and the water flooded many places in the district. Holiday was declared for all the schools in the district. Similar condition prevailed in the districts like Perambalur, Pudukkottai and Karur also.
Meanwhile, the farmers expressed happiness over the moderate showers in the districts like Karur, Tiruchy and a part of Perambalur and Thanjavur as it would help them raise the samba cultivation.
