Tamil Nadu's main opposition DMK Party held a demonstration at the Parliament compound in support of National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah.

The DMK's lawmakers in Parliament gathered near the statue of Mahathma Gandhi and demanded that Abdullah should be freed from house arrest.

The Indian government detained or restricted the movements of many political leaders in Jammu & Kashmir before it revoked special status for the state in August.

The leaders were detained to discourage possible protests against the move.
